Plant Series: "White Brushstroke", ink, 16" x 20", 1999

Over the last three years, a new object of study has arisen: plants and flowers. What is unique about this study is the approach to the subject. The plant or flower is viewed as a network of decision junctures instead of objects placed in juxtaposition. A line is followed by the eye and hand until it come to a juncture and then a new decision is made in terms of direction that the ink line will take. When a new decision is to be made, the ink line never starts at the same juncture that it left. A new path is found and drawn. It is as if an object, a plant or flower, was tied together with electrical points of decision therefore the whole drawing is seen as a continuous journey of the eye, not staying on one object (leaf or stem). There is no object, just a system of decisions.

In March of 1998, Kagle had a quintuple heart bye-pass where he was confined to sitting for almost six months (with a few trips in the automobile, driven by others). While in the hospital, he drew and sketched the ward, the room, the hallways, and the views from the window. Mostly though he drew architecture which, coupled with his interviewing and viewing the works of outstanding architects from all parts of the world, began a series of paintings that worked with the structure of architecture (but added Kagleís own color ideas). Another change in the work occurred because of the flying across America to interview architects. His Flightscapes, Stripescapes and Landscapes Plus came out of this new view of the world. While flying over Arizona, he noticed that farmers were plowing their field in circles within the square. This started a series of Flightscapes Plus, using the circles. Out of the circles and an interest in how Lucent Industries saw information as "bubble technology", Kagle began a series called "Quantumfoam 2001".
