12. J.F. Millet and Th. Rousseau 1814-1875-1812-1867
from Baskinâs Notes on the Artists: "These two great
painters are buried together, symbolic of their lifelong friendship,
deep, continuous, and abiding. They shared a conception of painting
called Barbizon, in which man and nature are symbiotically harmonious.
Millet has a particular vision of man shrouded in biblical monumentality;
man unintellectual, so close to the earth as to to be of the earth,
engaged in the timeless hoeing, plowing, shepherding, and the
other quotidian tasks of farm and countryside. Rousseau painted
landscape pure, hard, and sharp in the Auverne, early in his career.
As he developed, his feeling for landscape became freer and richer,
finding a sense of mystery and awe in large, open, and darkly
haunting field and forest. The two friends enriched each otherâs
concepts and understanding of the land and its labors, of landscape
brilliantly acheived.
